Donnie Yen to Star in ‘John Wick’ Caine Spinoff Movie

After the Hong Kong action hero resisted Asian stereotypes and received script changes, Lionsgate is creating a movie centered around his assassin persona.

In the untitled project, which is slated to film in Hong Kong in 2025, Yen will play the same character from John Wick: Chapter 4.

The upcoming film in the franchise, which does not yet have a director attached, will pick up where John Wick 4 left off after Caine broke his bond with the High Table.

The project also follows Yen, a seasoned action hero from Hong Kong, as he challenges the stereotypes of Asians in the original John Wick 4 script. Director of John Wick 4,

Chad Stahelski, finally gave in to pressure and changed Yen's character's name and outfit.

Yen, who was born in China, gained international recognition for his highly successful and critically acclaimed Ip Man film series.

. He also ventured into Hollywood, appearing in films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which brought in over $1 billion,

Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan. And it appears that Yen has moved past his doubts about his role in the John Wick universe.

The spinoff film centered on Yen's Caine is being developed by Stahelski as part of a recently disclosed agreement with Lionsgate to broaden the John Wick universe.

Producers Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road, Erica Lee, and Stahelski, who produces under his production banner 87Eleven Entertainment, will oversee the latest film following the Ballerina spinoff.

According to a statement from Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, "Donnie Yen captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more" from the moment he appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4.
